Welcome to the Interactive Map for Archaeological Khmer Sites
Bienvenue à la Carte Interactive des Sites Archéologiques Khmers
The Interactive Map for Archaeological Khmer Sites is based on an overview work started in 1990 by the École française d’Extrême-Orient (French Institute for Oriental Studies): the aim is to record in a single database the archives, photos, plans and the findings, collected by researchers during the last century.

This study’s numerous applications – conservation, tourist development and archaeological research – found a new dimension in 2002 through its partnership with the Prevention of Illegal Artwork Trade Programme, supported by the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs. A large-scale prospecting was undertaken in association with the Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts of Cambodia, it enabled us to initially describe more than 2,000 sites and to register nearly 3,000 new sites locations; these items can be found by using textual requests (name, location, survey number) and, as soon as possible, by means of map scanning.

Additional information about each monument or site (sources, bibliography, condition), as well as related documents (reports, drawings, photos) are available on a password-protected secured layer to registered students, research fellows and administrative authorities.

The expansion of the programme to the Khmer archaeological sites of adjacent countries is under consideration, as well as its translation into Thai, Lao, Vietnamese and Japanese. In any case, please don’t hesitate to share your comments with us; a mailbox is open to all, we’ll do our best to answer you as soon as possible.
